Circles of Excellence

February 9, 2015

If you have a business you probably spend quite a lot of time marketing. However on social sites like Twitter the intensity of thousands of people all shouting ‘We make ThingMiJigs, buy my ThingMiJigs can get a bit too much at some times and sound more like noise that anything useful.
I think it would be a lot more polite and helpful to instead to shout Box Co supplies us and they are brilliant’.
It’s more much more interesting and might even help someone find a good source of ThingMiJigs boxes. Then the Box Co might shout that Cardboard Co supplied them with great quality cardboard for their boxes.
Then Cardboard Co might shout that Gizmo Co supplied them with excellent cardboard cutting machinery.
Then Gizmo Co might shout that they got the ThingMiJigs cirles of excellence 2for their Gizmo machinery from you and they were very pleased with them.
To me this approach seems much more helpful and polite. It develops circles of excellence which we can trust and it’s the concept behind http://gibli.com/

Choosing the right business supplier

February 6, 2015

One of the main challenges faced by small businesses is finding the right suppliers. After all a good supplier can help you make money but a bad one will take money away from you.

Many people think that a supplier’s website and the appearance and professionalism of its staff will show the difference between the good and the bad.

However from personal experience and from the research we’ve conducted we can see that you can get good businesses with poor websites and untidy staff just as you can get bad suppliers with good websites and smart staff.

Therefore we conclude that the only way to tell is to use the experience of other businesses to guide you. If lots of them say say a supplier is good; most likely it is.

To solve this problem we constructed a web-based service where business people can rate their suppliers. Its at http://gibli.com and it allows users to rate both the supplier and their products or services.

The resulting scores are shown as a percentage figure for each supplier and each product or service. Some example data is shown on the Top 20 page at https://gibli.com/top-20 but the real strength of the service will be the search functionality. So a search for ‘design’ will show both Designers and Design services.

From this information a small business looking for a designer can chose which supplier is best for their purposes.
